What's Actually Inside That Recycled Bottle?
From rPET to recycled stainless steel, we're going behind the materials to understand what “recycled” really tells you — and what it doesn't.

You pick up a promotional bottle.
It looks good. Feels solid. The product information says: recycled stainless steel.
Excellent.
But here's a question we don't ask often enough: which bit?
The body? The lid? The handle? Every component?
And does "recycled" mean the same thing when we're talking about stainless steel, plastic, polyester or aluminium?
Welcome to Behind the Materials, where we're going to start looking past the headline and find out what product material descriptions are actually telling us. No lab coat required.
First things first: what does "recycled" actually mean?
At its simplest, recycled material is material that has been recovered and processed so it can be used again as an input.
Instead of relying entirely on virgin raw material, recycled material puts previously used or recovered material back into circulation.
That's useful information.
But the word recycled on its own doesn't necessarily tell us how much recycled material is present, which component contains it, where that recycled material came from, whether other virgin materials are also present, or whether the finished product itself can be recycled.
That's why the details matter.
A bottle isn't just a bottle
Take a typical reusable bottle. What looks like one simple product might actually contain several different materials.
Depending on its design, it could include a metal body, a plastic lid, a silicone seal, a carrying loop, internal components, surface coatings and printed or engraved branding.
As a conceptual example only — not the specification of any particular product — a bottle's material story might read: body, one material; lid, another; seal, another again; handle or loop, something different entirely. The actual composition of any given product depends on the information supplied for that product.
So when a product description says "recycled stainless steel bottle," we shouldn't automatically turn that into "this entire product is made from 100% recycled material."
Those are two very different statements.
The recycled-material claim needs to be understood in the context of the actual product information available.
Recycled stainless steel
Stainless steel can be recovered and recycled into material used in new manufacturing.
Where a promotional product is described as containing recycled stainless steel, the useful next questions are: which component contains it, is a recycled-content percentage provided, and is there certification or supporting documentation where relevant?
For a drink bottle, the recycled stainless steel may relate to the bottle body while components such as the lid, seal or handle may be made from other materials.
That's not unusual. It simply means we should describe the product accurately.
"Bottle body made with recycled stainless steel" tells your client considerably more than a vague green claim ever could.
Wait... what does that mean?
Material from a primary raw-material source
Material being used from a primary raw-material source rather than recovered recycled material. A product can contain a combination of recycled and virgin materials depending on its composition and manufacturing requirements.
No, "virgin" doesn't mean better or worse. It tells us where the material came from.

Here's another term you'll see regularly. rPET stands for recycled polyethylene terephthalate.
PET is a type of plastic commonly associated with beverage bottles and packaging, but it can also be processed into material used for other products.
Recycled PET can appear in promotional merchandise such as bags, textiles, accessories and selected product components.
Again, seeing rPET doesn't automatically tell us that every part of the finished product is recycled.
A bag, for example, might have an rPET main fabric while still containing zips, buckles, thread, lining or other components made from different materials.
That's why component-level information can be so useful.
Recycled aluminium
Aluminium is another material you'll commonly see paired with recycled-content claims. It may appear in drinkware, pens, technology accessories and other hard goods.
But the same rule applies: look at what the claim actually covers.
If the barrel of a pen is made from recycled aluminium, that doesn't automatically mean the clip, refill, tip and internal mechanism are also recycled aluminium.
And that's perfectly fine. We just need to stop asking one material description to explain an entire multi-component product.
Pre-consumer and post-consumer recycled material
Now we're going one level deeper. Recycled material can come from different sources.
Pre-consumer generally refers to material recovered from a manufacturing process before it reaches the end consumer — think manufacturing offcuts or suitable production material that can be recovered and used again rather than becoming waste.
Post-consumer generally refers to material recovered after it has been used by the end consumer. A familiar example is material recovered through consumer recycling streams and subsequently processed for another use.
Both involve recovered material, but they describe different points in the material's journey.
Quick myth buster
"Made from recycled material means the whole product is recycled."
Not necessarily. A recycled-content claim may relate to a specific material or component within a product. Other components can be made from different recycled or virgin materials. Always look at what the claim actually refers to.

We covered this in another Eco Edit story, but it's worth repeating because these two words are incredibly easy to mix up.
Recycled describes something about the material used to make the product. Recyclable relates to whether the product or material can potentially be recycled after use.
A product containing recycled material isn't automatically recyclable. Multiple materials, coatings, adhesives, construction methods and local recycling infrastructure can all affect what happens at end of life.
Same family of words. Very different questions.
So... is more recycled content always better?
This is where we're going to resist giving you the wonderfully convenient answer that more recycled automatically equals more sustainable.
Sustainability rarely behaves that nicely.
Recycled content is an important product attribute, but it is still one piece of a much larger picture.
Product quality matters. Manufacturing matters. Transport matters. Packaging matters. How long the product remains useful matters. What happens at the end of its life matters. And the quality and completeness of the information we have matters too.
So recycled content can help us understand a product.
It shouldn't be expected to tell the whole sustainability story by itself.
Why percentages matter
Compare these two descriptions: "made with recycled material" and "contains 60% recycled material in the main fabric."
The second statement gives us much more information. It tells us what the claim relates to and gives us a measurable amount.
That's why, where verified recycled-content percentages or component information are available, they can be more useful than broad environmental descriptions.
But here's the important Ecosource rule.
If the percentage isn't supported, we don't invent one.
Sometimes the most accurate answer is simply that recycled material is confirmed but a percentage isn't available. That's better than false precision.
What should I look for on a product page?
When you're considering a product containing recycled material, try looking for the material composition — what materials are actually listed?
Component information: does the recycled claim apply to the whole product or a particular part?
Recycled-content percentage: is a verified percentage available?
Certification: is there relevant certification or supporting documentation associated with the material claim?
Product construction: are there several different materials or components involved?
End-of-life information: is there reliable information about what can happen to the product after use?
You don't necessarily need an answer to every question.
The point is to understand what we know, what we don't know and what we're actually claiming.
This is why product data matters
Sustainability conversations become much more useful when we move beyond "green product", "eco bottle" and "sustainable bag", and start talking about actual product attributes.
That's one of the reasons Ecosource is putting more emphasis on structured material, certification and carbon information where it is available.
We want a reseller looking at a product to be able to understand more about why a particular sustainability attribute is being shown.
Not because we're trying to make every product sound perfect. There is no perfect promotional product.
We're trying to make the information behind the product clearer.
The takeaway
The next time you see recycled stainless steel, rPET or recycled aluminium on a product page, don't stop reading.
Ask: what part of the product does that refer to? Do we know the recycled-content percentage? Is supporting information available?
Those little details turn a marketing description into something much more useful.
And when your client asks "so what's actually recycled?", you'll have a much better answer than "well... the website had a green leaf next to it."
